The Beattie Productions / Off the Grid Studios Crew is hitting the road June 19th to shoot a fly fishing film for the 2016 Fly Fishing Film Tour. Our team has partnered with Adventure Destinations International to stalk the largest northern pike in the Northern Hemisphere.
It’s human nature to conjure images of a new destination. Our ability to project is nothing short of astounding: We imagine what a place might look like, what adventures will emerge and what story will unfold. All we really know is that Saskatchewan is tough to spell and that we’re heading to its northern wilds this week.
A quick map glance reveals large swathes of road-less territory. More than 100,000 lakes dot the north country of Saskatchewan. We’ll be fishing some of the most remote bodies of water in North America. Adventure Destinations runs three fishing lodges and six outpost camps in Central and Northern Saskatchewan, all of which offer access to some of the most pristine and untouched angling on the planet. Using float planes, we’ll jump from lake-to-lake and camp-to-camp. Last year the outfitters broke a long-standing lake record, when a client landed a 53-inch pike.
Jeff Currier – Global Angler
Jeff Currier’s life as an angler, fishing guide, author, artist and world traveler for more than four decades is absolutely unbelievable. He’s covered more than 50 countries on six continents and landed more than 300 species on the fly. Fishing has formed the person that he is today – from his career to where he has made his home base, in Victor, Idaho. In spite of his accomplishments, Jeff is a remarkably easy-going, salt-of-the-earth kind of guy. He just happens to be one of the top fly rod predators in the world, this time, heading to Saskatchewan in pursuit of one of the largest and most aggressive North American freshwater predators on the planet – the Northern Pike.
He is presently serves as a professional advisor to numerous companies, including, R.L Winston Rod Co., Simms Fishing Products, Scientific Anglers, Ross Reels, Abel Reels, and Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures. Jeff has penned several books, including, Currier’s Quick and Easy Guide to Saltwater Fly Fishing and Currier’s Quick and Easy Guide to Warmwater Fly Fishing. Not only does Jeff fish, but he is also a recognized artist.
Ron Striker – Bush Pilot
Fly fishing wasn’t on Ron’s radar until he magically fell into the outfitting industry. In 2000, he was working as a grocery bagger and bored with the direction his life was taking. To fix that, he got his pilot’s license. Since landing here, he hasn’t looked back. Raised in British Columbia, Ron has spent the past 15 years as a bush pilot in the far reaches of Canada. He will fly our crew into prime pike territory, where we’ll aim for 45 to 50-inch Northern Pike.
What are the moments in life that define thresholds from one form of existence to the next? The larger storyline will relate to Jeff, Ron the great Canadian wilderness, and the pivotal moments in their lives that brought them here, to this point in time. How did Jeff make the leap from mere angler to global fly fishing expert? How did Ron go from grocery bagger to bush pilot? As we search for trophy pike, we’ll seek to understand the defining moments in each of these men’s disparate lives and to make those moments relatable to viewers.
The first flight folds its tires Friday, June 19. We’ll be posting from the road. Follow the journey.
